PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Walmart stores in Rhode Island plan to start offering their customers check-cashing services in January.
The Providence Journal reports that the chain's nine Ocean State stores will cash tax-refund checks from Jan. 2 to April 17.
Daniel Eckert, head of financial services for the retail giant, says the check-cashing trial will test the appetite for offering the same services year-round.
There will be a 50-cent fee to cash a check.
The newspaper reports that Rhode Island is one of three states nationwide in which Arkansas-based Walmart stores do not currently offer check-cashing services.
The others are New Jersey and New York.
