Unemployment benefits pared back for RI

Length of benefits reduced from 53 to 47

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The number of weeks Rhode Islanders out of work can collect federal emergency unemployment benefits is being pared back.

The state Department of Labor and Training says that, as of Sunday, the maximum number of weeks to receive the benefits will drop from 53 to 47. The program is being completely phased out nationally as of late December.

State officials note the change doesn't affect regular unemployment insurance, which provides for 26 weeks of benefits. That means the total number of weeks of available unemployment will now be 73.

As of July, Rhode Island was no longer eligible for the so-called "state extended benefits" unemployment program because of recent jobless data.

Rhode Island's unemployment rate of 10.8 percent is the second highest in the U.S.
