Temperatures sizzle in July

PROVIDENCE, RI (AP) - It’s certainly been hot in New England this summer, but how hot?

The National Weather Service says there were 10 days in which temperatures hit 90 degrees or higher in Boston in July. The record for the month was 15, set in 1994.

Residents of Hartford, Conn., sweltered through 15 days of 90-plus heat in July, one short of the record of 16 set in 1955 and again in 1966. It’s been 90 degrees or warmer 21 times this year in Hartford.

Providence had eight 90-plus days in July, the record was 15 in 1952 and 12 so far this year.

The weather service says average daily temperatures through Friday for Boston and Hartford were about 4 degrees above average, and about 4.7 degrees above average in Providence.
