Hurricane presented barrier's first major test

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The worst of Monday night's storm is past us, and the Fox Point Barrier is being relieved of its duties.

The U.S. Army Corps lowered the barrier at about 6:45 a.m. in preparation for its first major test with Hurricane Sandy.

The area saw moderate flooding throughout the storm, with area sidewalks under several feet of water. The storm surge was the first major test for the barrier.

"The barrier worked superbly, we were prepared for up to 12 feet of water," said Prov. Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare. "Luckily we didn't get that high, but you always have to be prepared."

No, the Rhode Island National Guard is looking ahead to the cleanup that will happen throughout the state.

"We're assessing the damage as the night wears on, and then we'll start looking at how we can recover as quickly as possible," said Major Gen. Kevin McBride of the RI National Guard.

Even though the worst of Sandy is past us, Commissioner Pare is still asking people to remain indoors.

"Although the water is receding, the water is still very active so stay home," he said.
