PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Hanukah may have started Saturday, but a menorah lighting to in celebration of the Jewish holiday is scheduled to take place at the Rhode Island State House Monday night.
Rabbi Yehoshua Laufer of Chabad of Rhode Island will perform the lighting at 7 p.m.
The menorah will be displayed right near the now-controversial State House "holiday" tree.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee created a firestorm for the second year, after refusing to refer to the tree as a Christmas tree. This year, in an effort to avoid protests, Chafee's office held a tree lighting ceremony with just 30 minutes notice.
The lighting will be hosted by a private group and Gov. Chafee is not expected to be in attendance.
