PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Senate President M. Teresa Paiva Weed has introduced legislation that would repeal the new 7 percent sales tax on sightseeing tours.
Tourism is a key industry in her home district of Aquidneck Island.
The Newport Democrat promised last fall to repeal the tax, despite approving the measure as part of the $7.7 billion 2012 budget adopted by lawmakers over the summer.
The Providence Journal reports that Paiva Weed called for the repeal after the tourism industry strongly objected to the tax that took effect Oct. 1.
It represents about $1 million in projected state revenue and applies to certain scenic tours and transportation that are partly in Rhode Island.
