PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - All teachers at the Rhode Island School for the Deaf have been notified that they may be laid off if they do not meet the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act .
Until now, teachers at the school have only been required to be certified for teaching students who are deaf or hard of hearing. But the No Child Left Behind Act requires all teachers to also be certified in the specific subject they teach.
The school, however, is working on a new staffing plan that may include "team teaching," which would allow some teachers without the double qualification to keep their jobs.
The layoff notices were approved by the school's Board of Trustees Tuesday night.
The Rhode Island School for the Deaf was taken over by the state last fall.
