PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Plaques commemorating work done during the Great Depression have been disappearing from Roger Williams Park in Providence.
Parks Superintendent Robert McMahon tells The Providence Journal that the small bronze plaques have been pried from the sidewalks and curbs.
They read "Built by Works Progress Administration," a New Deal jobs program that was responsible for building the park's sidewalks, roads and helping construct its Japanese garden and seal pond.
McMahon says officials are not sure how many of the signs have been taken from the 435-acre park, or how many there are in the park.
They have asked scrap dealers to be on the lookout for them.
Historian Al Klyberg, of Lincoln, says such signs are often stolen as souvenirs of the era.
