PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - It will soon cost you more to take the bus.

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority is putting its latest fare increase into effect.

A basic one-trip ticket will now cost $2, up from $1.75.

Although the fare increase was officially supposed to start on September 1, RIPTA buses will not cost anything on Wednesday, because it is an Air Quality Alert day.

The struggling transit agency expects to lose about 6 percent of its ridership.
