RI launches new tax amnesty program
State owed about $122M in delinquent taxes

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Governor Lincoln Chafee officially launched the state's new tax amnesty program on Wednesday.
Rhode Island is now offering a 75-day amnesty period, from September 2 through November 15, 2012.
The program is the result of legislation approved by the General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Chafee on June 15. It includes incentives to encourage those who have fallen behind on their taxes to pay what they owe.
Rhode Island is currently owed about $122 million in delinquent taxes.
If someone files an amnesty application, files past-due returns, and pays their delinquent tax, the Rhode Island Division of Taxation will:
- Waive penalties
- Reduce interest by 25 percent
- Agree not to pursue civil or criminal penalties
- Allow the person to renew licenses
The program is open to those who owe personal income tax, and those who owe other state taxes - such as corporate income tax, sales and use tax, and employer taxes.
