PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island's education commissioner is recommending the closure of a charter high school in Providence, citing low math scores and leadership problems.
Commissioner Deborah Gist is urging members of the board of regents not to renew the charter of the Academy for Career Exploration when it expires after the 2012-2013 school year.
The recommendation is contained in materials issued in advance of the board's Thursday meeting.
Gist says the school has consistently failed to educate students in math and that its administrative and board leadership hasn't provided adequate oversight.
She says the school's curriculum is incomplete and there is no formal process for reviewing or revising it.
The school serves about 225 students.
A message was left for school CEO Lawrence DeSalvatore Jr.
