PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Rhode Island lawmakers won't be faced with as much red ink as expected when they return to the state house on Jan. 1 to begin crafting their budget.
A $130 million deficit was initially projected for the fiscal year beginning on July 1.
On Wednesday, the House Finance Committee met and determined that newer forecasts predict a gap that's nearly half that size, at $69 million.
Gov. Chafee is expected to submit his budget proposal to lawmakers in mid-January.
