RI food assistance at an all-time high

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP/WPRI) - A report says the number of Rhode Islanders seeking food assistance is at an all-time high.
The Rhode Island Community Food Bank's 2012 Status Report on Hunger in Rhode Island, released Monday, also says the state ranks highest in food insecurity, which is defined as limited access to adequate food, in New England.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 67,000 households, or 15.5% of Rhode Island households, lack adequate food.
The report says 178 member agencies serve more people now than at any time in the past. Between July 2011 and July 2012, agencies provided 17.9 million meals to people in need.
The study also found that 24 percent of Rhode Island households receive food stamps.
