PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Two local couples are given the perfect gift to start out the New Year: a healthy baby.

For one set of the new moms and dads, the little bundle of joy is a miracle.

When Marion Gonzalez of Providence went into labor early Friday morning, the thought did occur to her that she might have one of the new decade's first babies.

She did. Little Xavier weighed in at six pounds one ounce.

"I'm surprised and extremely happy to have a healthy baby boy," said Gonzalez.

Toya Homes is calling little Broderick Parrish her "Miracle Baby" for many reasons. He was the first New Year's baby to be born in Southeastern Massachusetts and the first for her and her husband after 15 years together.

The couple had spent many years wondering if they would ever have a child.

"I didn't think I would be able to have kids, it's such a blessing for my mom and grandmother," said Homes.

Little Broderick and his family received a New Year's welcome gift basket, including a savings bond -- and his parents said they know how lucky they were to welcome their little guy on this big day.

Of course, these two baby boys are not alone; it's estimated more than 400,000 other babies will be born across the world on January 1, 2010.
