Recycling improves with Big Green Cans
Providence's recycling rate jumps past 20 percent

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Providence has improved its recycling rate, and Mayor Angel Taveras is giving credit to the city's Big Green Cans.
The city says the rate was below 15 percent in September before it introduced 95-gallon green bins in which residents can put all their materials together for recycling. The rate has improved in just six weeks to over 20 percent.
The introduction of the bins came after the state recycling program began accepting unsorted recyclables, meaning residents no longer have to separate paper, metals and plastics in different receptacles.
Providence residents got new 65-gallon gray trash barrels for curbside trash pickup. The green cans once used for trash were converted to recycle bins.
So far two-thirds of city households have the green cans.
