PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Providence's nine neighborhood libraries are closed this week to make up for a cut in city funding.
All Providence Community Library System branches will be closed Monday through Saturday. Regular hours will resume on Monday, Sept. 17.
The library system says further service cuts for patrons were prevented because employees agreed to forego the library's normal retirement savings contribution. Some of the funds proposed to be cut were restored in the municipal budget, but there was still a shortfall.
The Central Library in downtown Providence, which is operated separately, remains open normal hours this week. It is closed on Wednesdays.
