PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The United States Post Office announced Thursday it's closing the district office in Providence to save money.
The Postmaster General announced he's going to shut down a total of seven offices across the country.
The closures would affect nearly 7,500 administrative and executive jobs. However, it's unclear how many of those jobs are in Rhode Island.
A spokeswoman from the Postal Service emphasized the closure is the district office, not the Providence Post Office itself.
The U.S. Postal Service lost $8.5 billion dollars in 2010.
It considering several cost-cutting measures, including the elimination of Saturday delivery. However, that change would have to be approved by Congress.
