PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Drunk drivers are being targeted across Rhode Island this weekend.

It is part of a new joint effort between Rhode Island's Department of Public Safety, The Rhode Island Department of Transportation Office of Highway safety, and police departments from Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

On Saturday night, Massachusetts State Police sent one of its mobile Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) vehicles to help launch the "You Drink & Drive, You Lose" campaign.

Police say the BAT vehicle, parked near downtown Providence nightclubs, will act as a visual deterrent for potential offenders.  It also provides offices will complete on-site testing and detention capabilities.

While the number of impaired-driving fatalities has dropped across the country, the problem continues in Rhode Island.

The state ranks in the top 5 states for impaired driving deaths.

The campaign will last through Labor Day weekend.
