PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence police have launched an internal investigation after photos of two women planking on a city police van surfaced.

Planking is when someone lies on their stomach with their arms and legs stretched out. It broke out as an online trend last spring.

A viewer sent the photos of the two women planking to Eyewitness News.

"The incident took place several months ago. The officers operating the police van identified themselves and the administration will take necessary action," said Steven Pare.

The photos reportedly made the rounds on Facebook over the last several weeks. An eyewitness wrote that the women were drunk and one of the apparent plankers may have fallen off the van.

Eyewitness News reached out to the mayor's office for comment on this story, but so far no one has returned our calls.
