PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Construction is underway on a $2.1 million expansion to the Providence Emergency Management Agency's headquarters.
Mayor Angel Taveras, Senators Jack Reed and Sheldon Whitehouse, Lt. Governor Elizabeth Roberts and other officials took part in a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday at PEMA's Emergency Operations Center on Charles Street.
The expansion will include a regional training facility and a new garage, according to Mayor Taveras' office.
PEMA Director Pete Gaynor said the addition will also include a dormitory, a kitchen, showers, and laundry facilities. Gaynor said this will allow the staff to remain at the operations center longer, in the event of a major emergency.
The project is expected to be finished by July 2013.
