Prov. cop fired for sex on the job

Officer reportedly responding to domestic call

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Calling the behavior of a Providence police officer outrageous and despicable, the department's top officials announced they've fired a 15-year veteran of the force.

The termination of Officer Khatchig Kazandijian stems from sexual assault allegations WPRI.com reported first in May, 2012. At that time, police confirmed the department and state police were investigating a then-active member of the Providence police force.

Police said Kazandijian last spring responded to a domestic call between a boyfriend and a girlfriend and during the course of his investigation had sexual relations with the woman, 19.

The woman later went to the hospital, reporting the incident as a sexual assault and the hospital then notified police.

While a grand jury declined to prosecute Kazandijian criminally, the department found his behavior a fireable offense.

During the department's investigation, police say Kazandijian admitted to having sex with the woman.

Kazandijian said while investigating the domestic call, he found drugs, paraphernalia and evidence of drug use by the victim. After she admitted to having drug paraphernalia in the apartment, Kazandijian claimed the woman offered sexual favors. Officials say he responded by saying, "Okay, if that's your thrill, no problem."

Public Safety Commissioner Steven M. Pare said Kazandijian, who was described as a decent officer, made a real poor decision that ended his career.

His termination took effect Jan. 24 and he has 30 days to appeal.

Pare said Kazandijian is a vested member in the city's pension system, and is currently still eligible. However, Pare is trying to put a stop to any payments.
