Cops: Lincoln woman's license had been suspended

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - 23-year-old George Adams IV is now frozen in time, a photograph on a memorial cross at the place where he was hit and killed last Thursday morning, walking down North Main Street, hand in hand with a friend. The woman accused of hitting him is now under arrest -- and the family of the victim is making their heartbreak known.

"It was like they were walking and talking, holding hands," said George's father, George Adams III, on Monday. Mounds of unshoveled ice had forced them off the sidewalk. "And all of a sudden, he got ripped from her hand. He was gone that fast." He later died at the hospital.

The best friend he'd been walking with, Marissa Capp, tearfully related how George was struck: "I went to go say something to him, and he just went right by me.

"I thought I was dreaming, and I'd wake up and I'd be at his house and he'd be smiling at me," she said. The two knew each other since kindergarten.

His family and friends remember George IV as outgoing, a car enthusiast, and lover of music.

Eyewitness helped find suspect

An eyewitness who saw the car drive away ended up chasing after the car. The driver never hit her brakes, the eyewitness said -- and later tried to ditch the vehicle and take off on foot.

Police eventually tracked down the woman they believe was the driver, Haley Mckee, 31, in Lincoln. Her charges include leaving the scene of an accident-death resulting, reckless driving -- and driving with a suspended license.

The Adamses said Monday that Providence Police had refused to tell them anything about the allegations -- that a suspect was arrested, or that she was appearing in court.

However, the family is grateful to that eyewitness. They're laying George to rest Tuesday.

Eyewitness News went to Mckee's apartment to ask her why -- as the eyewitness said -- she drove away, or why her license was suspended, but nobody answered the door Monday.
