PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The city of Providence is officially swearing in a new police chief Friday afternoon. Col. Hugh Clements Jr. is taking the oath in a public ceremony at 5 p.m. at the city council chambers.
Mayor Angel Taveras chose Clements, a 26-year veteran of the department, to fill the position following a nationwide search.
He was actually sworn in as the new police chief in a private ceremony Friday, January 6th; today's event is ceremonial.
Clements took over as interim chief starting when Col. Dean Esserman, his predecessor, resigned -- following an incident of underage drinking at a party held at Esserman's home.
