PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Recent studies have shown that both West Nile Virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis are not currently present in Rhode Island.
According to the Department of Environmental Management, all 166 mosquito pools that were tested statewide came up negative for the two potentially fatal diseases.
This should come as a relief to Rhode Islanders, as West Nile was found in Westerly in the July 9 survey , and EEE has been found several times this season in Massachusetts.
Regardless, the DEM strongly urges residents to be vigilant in protecting against mosquitoes, as the late summer and early fall are the most prevalent time for both diseases.
