PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence Mayor David Cicilline will not veto a $274 million property tax levy passed by the city council after all.

Cicilline says while he is still opposed to the measure, he will let is become law without his signature because it could lead to a delay in revenue for the city.

July 31st is the deadline to set the city's tax rate.

The Providence City Council this week narrowly approved a measure that increases the residential property tax rate 25 percent and repeals a tax break for many non-owner occupied buildings.

Councilors said even with the higher tax rate many homeowners will pay lower taxes in this fiscal year because of property revaluation.
