PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A Providence man is accused of abusing his girlfriend's baby.

28-year old Basil Carter was arraigned Friday morning on one count of first degree child abuse.

Providence police tell Eyewitness News, five month old Karla Champlin was rushed to Hasbro Children's hospital Thursday, where she remains hospitalized.

She suffered bruising between her brain and skull and bleeding in her eyes.

While her injuries are serious, police say they are not considered life-threatening.

Police say Carter claimed he was home alone with the baby at 22 Bernon Street when she fell, but doctors say the injuries are consistent with abuse.

Carter was ordered held on $40,000 surety bail.
