PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The future of Providence's community library branches is safe ... for at least six more months.
On Thursday, Mayor Angel Taveras announced that the Providence Public Library has extended its lease agreements for the city's seven branch buildings by six months.
The library leases each of the buildings to the city for $1 a year. The libraries are then run by the non-profit Providence Community Library.
The Providence Community Library recently issued layoff notices to all its employees because of uncertainty over the lease agreements, which were set to expire on June 30.
Thursday's deal extends the lease deals until October 1. Both sides hope to reach a deal before the October 1 deadline.
