PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island lawmaker wants to prohibit companies from demanding a potential employee's user names and passwords to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.
State Rep. Brian Patrick Kennedy says he wants to stop a practice reported in other states in which companies require job applicants to provide their login information to social media sites.
Kennedy's bill would also bar employers from demanding that an employee add them to their list of contacts on social media.
The proposal is similar to a new law in California and would also apply to colleges and universities.
The Hopkinton Democrat announced his legislation on Wednesday.
