PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Nearly 35 million Americans plan to travel this Labor Day weekend, up 9.9% from 2009.

AAA Southern New England says 91% of those travelers - about 31.4 million people - will be making the trips by car. This number is up 10.3% from last year's Labor Day , when 28.5 million traveled by car.

Leisure air travel is expected to account for 5% of the overall Labor Day travel. The remaining 4% will travel by train, bus or boat.

Lloyd Albert, Senior Vice President of Public & Government Affairs for AAA Southern New England, says: "While media reports on the state of the U.S. economy mixed, many Americans are still interested in taking one more trip as the summer travel season comes to a close."

Albert also says that the numbers are an encouraging sign of the improving economy.
