PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is formally honoring former councilman Joseph DeLuca who died in July after representing the Mount Pleasant neighborhood for almost 20 years.
Taveras is scheduled to formally name the intersection of Atwells and Mount Pleasant avenues as the Joseph DeLuca Square. Others expected to attend the Saturday afternoon ceremony include Ward 6 City Councilor Michael Correia and other members of the Providence City Council.
DeLuca was born in Italy and moved to the U.S. with his family at age 10. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and worked as a contractor in Providence. He was first elected to the City Council in 1991 and was last elected in 2006.
DeLuca died July 1 after a battle with cancer.
