Legislation meant as compromise on gay marriage

PROVIDENCE - The House Judiciary Committee plans to vote on a bill Tuesday that would allow same-sex couples to enter into civil unions.

The bill was filed as a compromise for gay marriage, which House Speaker Gordon Fox and others believed had no chance of passing this year.

Both same-sex marriage opponents and supporters have come out against the civil unions bill. Opponents say it redefines marriage, while same-sex supporters say it does not go far enough.
