PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A group of disabled Rhode Islanders and their caregivers rallied at the State House Tuesday afternoon to protest big budget cuts to programs serving those with developmental disabilities.
The group calling itself the "Have a Heart Coalition" wants to reverse $24 million in cuts to those programs, which were made last year as part of state efforts to close a $331 million budget shortfall.
"Right now, these cuts, if they keep happening...it's devastating," said Tammy Beller, whose daughter counts on a work program that might be in jeapordy. "I have to believe that they don't completely realize how important it is in their lives, because you couldn't do it if you realize how important it is."
Other people at the rally in the rotunda put the blame for not reversing the cuts squarely on Governor Chafee.
Adult daycare programs are being hit particularly hard, since the cuts have forced layoffs caregiver layoffs and leaving those programs with no other way to finance their services.
