PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Drivers found guilty of seriously injuring people in hit-and-run accidents will face stiffer penalties, under a bill signed into law Friday by Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

Under the new law, anyone convicted of leaving the scene of an accident where someone was seriously hurt will automatically have their license suspended.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin supported the bill.
