PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A Providence gas station was hit by several bullets in a drive-by shooting Saturday afternoon.

Providence Police tell Eyewitness News that at about 4:30 p.m., six shots were fired at the Shell station at the corner of River and Chalkstone Avenues.  The intended target was a man who was standing outside his car pumping gas.  Nobody was hit, but several bullets hit the pump and the front of the building.

According to police, a car that was driving on River Avenue slowed down and fired the six shots, then sped away.

The intended victim got into his car and chased that vehicle in River Avenue.  A police officer nearby heard the shots but by the time officers arrived on scene, both vehicles were gone.

Last Wednesday night, shots were fired at a gas station at the intersection of Cranston Street and Webster Avenue in Cranston .  A 2-year old toddler was hurt when a bullet struck the car she was riding in and showered her with pieces of glass.

Providence police say they are unsure if the two incidents are related, but are still investigating.
