PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A local farm is donating thousands of eggs to needy Rhode Islanders just in time for Easter.
On Wednesday, Little Rhody Foods delivered six hundred cartons of eggs to the Rhode Island Community Food Bank. That amounts to 7,200 eggs.
It is part of a nationwide effort to donate nearly ten million eggs to food pantries nationwide.
"There are a lot of people out there that are having a tough time," said Eli Berkowitz, co-owner of Little Rhody Foods. "We understand that as a company and as a family business too, and we want to try to help wherever we can to make things better for people."
The Rhode Island Community Food Bank says Wednesday's donation will go a long way to helping local families in need.
"We have a huge need here in Rhode Island," explained Director of Communications Cindy Elder. "We're feeding over sixty thousand people a month through our network of emergency food pantries and eggs are a terrific source of protein, so it's a real gift from a local company."
The Rhode Island Community Food Bank distributes nine-and-a-half million pounds of food to families in need each year.
According to the agency, one-third of the 60,000 Rhode Islanders who receive food assistance are children.
