Escaped inmate captured in New York

Police found Nayquan Gadson at Brooklyn apartment

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - The man who escaped from the Adult Correctional Institutions more than a week ago is now back in police custody.

Nayquan Gadson slipped past security guards on July 27 by posing as an inmate who was set to be released on bail.

When Rhode Island State Police Investigators learned that Gadson was staying in Brooklyn, NY, they passed that information to the New York/New Jersey Task Force, whose officers were able to arrest him around 7:00 p.m. Friday.

At first, Gadson denied who he was, but officials were able to use fingerprints to determine his real identity.

Investigators say Gadson had tried to change his appearance by cutting his hair and trying to alter a scar on his face.

As of Saturday afternoon, Gadson was being held in Manhattan and is expected to be arraigned this weekend as a fugitive from justice.

Officials expect Gadson to be extradited to Rhode Island sometime next week.

They are still investigating how he got to New York.

Rhode Island Corrections Director A.T. Wall released this statement Saturday following the arrest of Gadson:

"I would like to extend my appreciation to the Rhode Island State Police and the United States Marshals for their determination and professionalism in tracking down and capturing Nayquan Gadson."
