PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - A man accused of stabbing a social worker to death in 2001 has been indicted on new charges.
A grand jury has charged Anthony Tavares with seven counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of simple assault, and two counts of assault on a health care provider.
On June 7, prosecutors say Tavares assaulted multiple patients and employees at Eleanor Slater Hospital with a pencil, and with his hands and feet.
Tavares was committed to the Cranston mental health facility back in 2004 after he was acquitted by reason of insanity of the stabbing death of his caseworker, Glenn Hayes.
Tavares has been found emotionally competent to stand trial on these recent charges. He's currently being held at the ACI and is scheduled to be arraigned in Providence County Superior Court August 15.
