PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Deepwater Wind has submitted its final permit applications to build a wind farm off Block Island.
The company announced Tuesday it had filed permit applications with state and federal agencies, following three years of study into the project's potential environmental impact.
Deepwater Wind hopes to construct the country's first offshore wind farm on Block Island sound. The project calls for five wind turbines about three miles from the island.
The developer said it expects the permitting process to be resolved by early 2013.
