PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Rhode Island residents must be registered to vote soon if they want to cast a ballot in the state's primary election.

Voters have until Sunday to be registered in time to vote in the Sep. 11 statewide primary.

This is the first year in which voters will be asked to present identification at the polls. The state is providing free IDs to voters who lack a driver's license, U.S. passport, military ID, bus pass or other government-issued identification.

The IDs are also available at the Secretary of State's elections office in Providence.

The general election is Nov. 6.
