Man who sued DCYF arrested on warrant

DAYTON, OHIO (WPRI) -- An outspoken advocate for reform at the Rhode Island DCYF is in police custody in Ohio following his arrest on an outstanding warrant.

According to arrest logs, 25 year-old Nicholas Alahverdian turned himself in to Harvard University Police in Boston on November 9th.  

Alahverdian is suing the DCYF, alleging physical and sexual abuse while he was in state care as a teenager.  Earlier this year, the DCYF billed him $207,000 for "medical assistance" he received while in state care.  He is a student at Harvard University and has lobbied at the State House for reform at the DCYF.

WHIO-TV in Dayton reports that Alahverdian was convicted in 2008 of public indecency at Sinclair Community College in that city; as one of the conditions of his sentence he was supposed to register as a sex offender.  According to a prosecutor in Dayton, he has not registered and his sentence is currently stayed as he has appealed that conviction and asked for a new trial.

WHIO reports that Alahverdian was supposed to appear in Dayton for a court hearing on September 26th but did not appear, so a warrant for his arrest was issued.

The Montgomery County, Ohio, Sheriff's Office lists Alahverdian as an inmate and indicates that he was extradited there and booked Thursday night.  He is currently being held without bail.
