PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Providence councilman expects the city's new registration requirements for lobbyists to take effect next month after a final vote by the City Council.
Providence would be the first city or town in the state to require lobbyists to register. The City Council approved the rules last year and is scheduled to vote on an amended version of the requirements on Oct. 18.
Councilman John Igliozzi expects the requirements to take effect in November. He says they would provide checks and balances to hold lobbyists accountable.
Lobbyists would have to register with the city, file quarterly reports and wear identification badges. Violators could be fined up to $250 a day.
The rules drew protests last year from the ACLU, which said they were too far-reaching and would chill community advocacy.
