System unveiled during informational meeting

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence city planners are considering a streetcar system.

The public received a first glimpse at the plan at an informational meeting at Brown University Tuesday night.

RIPTA says the $76 million streetcar system will improve the current system.

The plan calls for bus lines running from Cranston to Pawtucket, a reconfiguration of Kennedy Plaza, and a two-mile streetcar line running from the universities on the east side to the hospitals in south Providence.

Local leaders and the Obama administration have already thrown their support behind the plan and RIPTA has moved forward with applying for transportation funding.

But many residents still have plenty of questions.

There will be another public informational meeting Wednesday night at the Flynn Elementary School on Blackstone Street from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
