PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The Providence Community Library System will close its branches for a week in September to make up for a $205,000 cut in city funding.
The library system announced it will close Monday, Sept. 10, through Saturday, Sept. 15. Regular hours will resume on Monday, Sept. 17.
Officials say employees agreed to forego the library's normal 401(k) contribution, preventing further cuts in service for patrons.
A spokeswoman says some of the funds proposed to be cut were restored, but the system already was operating at "bare bones" and had to find a way to make up for the remaining shortfall.
The Providence Community Library System operates nine neighborhood libraries.
