PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- Congressman David Cicilline enlisted the help of a political heavy-hitter Saturday.

Former President Bill Clinton endorsed Cicilline in his campaign for re-election via a telephone recording.

"David Cicilline was one of America's most innovative and effective mayors," Clinton said in the recording that went out to voters.

"David Cicilline is the best candidate for Rhode Island," Clinton said, "he's the one on your side."

For his part, Congressman Cicilline praised Clinton in a news release about the robo-calls, lauding Clinton for presiding over "the longest economic expansion in American history."

Cicilline is embroiled in a contentious race against Republican and former Rhode Island State Police Superintendent Brendan Doherty for the 1st District Congressional seat.
