PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Providence's Latino mayor is heading to the White House to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with the President and First Lady.

Mayor Angel Taveras received an invitation to the presidential Cinco de Mayo party set to take place Thursday afternoon, according to Rhode Island Public Radio.

Wednesday, the mayor is flying to Washington for the occasion, according to a spokesman for the mayor. No taxpayer funds are being spent on the trip; it's being paid for with campaign money.

Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May, is celebrated in Mexico and the United States in observance of the victory of Mexican forces over the French in 1862.

Taveras, the son of Dominican immigrants, is the city's first Latino mayor. It is the second year in a row he's been invited to the party.

During the trip, Taveras will also meet with White House director of intergovernmental affairs, David Agnew.
