PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- A young boy and his father remain hospitalized after being badly burned in a recent house fire.
Both Christopher Husband and his 5-year-old son, Christophe Etienne, were upgraded from critical condition to serious condition overnight. As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, Husband's condition was reduced to critical, while the young boy is still in serious condition.
Etienne suffered serious burns to more than 80 percent of his body after a fire broke out in his family's duplex in Providence Sunday night. Investigators determined he accidentally started the fire while playing with matches.
Husband also suffered burns while saving his young son from the flames.
"It's unfortunate," said Providence Fire Capt. Frank Silva. "People need to be conscientious about where they leave matches, lighters, they need to make sure they put them away, locked up, so they're out of reach of children."
Members of the Providence School District's crisis team will be at Etienne's elementary school Tuesday as the young boy continues to recover.
