PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Governor Lincoln Chafee has chosen a native Rhode Islander to become the state's first chief digital officer.

Woonsocket native Thom Guertin was selected for the position following a three-month, national search.

The position, created by the General Assembly this year, is designed to help better integrate technology into state government to improve services available to Rhode Islanders.

Guertin currently works as a technology executive for the Boston Globe New York Times.  He also helped launch the website Monster.com.

Guertin holds a B.A. from the University of Rhode Island and a Corporate Finance Certificate from Bryant University.

His first day on the job will be October 22.
