PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- Gov. Lincoln Chafee says he's still considering allowing Rhode Island to issue driver's licenses for illegal immigrants.
The Providence Journal reports that the governor promised to about 50 immigrant rights advocates on Monday that he will continue to review the issue.
He said he has been looking at how other states have handled similar programs and said he will meet soon with advocates.
Chafee called it a road safety issue.
Protesters on the other side of the argument tried to get their point across. Terry Gorman and members of Rhode Islanders For Immigration Law Enforcement oppose driver's licenses for immigrants who are illegally in the United States.
He said it does not make sense that Rhode Island would consider issuing such licenses.
