PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Brown University president is recommending the school keep three athletic programs being considered for cuts.
The Brown Daily Herald reports President Ruth Simmons has called on the university's governing body to maintain the ski, fencing and wrestling programs this year.
The Athletics Review Committee proposed the programs be eliminated in April.
Simmons says the future of the programs should depend on their ability to raise enough money over the next year to cover their expenses.
She is also recommending the number of slots set aside to admit athletes be reduced from 225 to 205 students.
Simmons says the money set aside to match financial aid offers from other Ivy League schools should be increased.
Simmons is also calling for athletic recruits to meet higher academic standards.
