PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) - Dozens of students rallied at Brown University Thursday to call for the legalization of same-sex marriage in Rhode Island.
The demonstration was organized by the group Rhode Island Students for Equality, or RIDE.
Participants are urging the General Assembly to support a number of bills that would give gay couples the same marriage rights as straight couples here in Rhode Island.
There are currently seven bills regarding same-sex marriage in the General Assembly: two in the House, and five in the Senate.
Some of the legislation calls for the legalization of gay marriage, while other bills would recognize civil unions. There is also a push to put the question to voters on a statewide referendum.
Governor Lincoln Chafee and House Speaker Gordon Fox support gay marriage. Senate President Teresa Paiva-Weed has expressed her opposition.
